Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for Treatment at Mending Hearts

How can someone be admitted to treatment?The first step is to complete a Pre-Admission Screening form on our website.  The form gathers pertinent information which allows our team to deem if the applicant is appropriate for placement in one of Mending Hearts’ programs.  Assessment takes approximately 48 hours to complete, and then our Admissions team will be in contact with the applicant to inform them of the assessment.  For any additional questions, please contact the Admissions Department at 615.385.1696


How much does treatment cost?
Because we believe that all persons should have access to treatment, programs at Mending Hearts are often considerably less than other treatment facilities. Mending Hearts accepts most major insurance, is an approved TennCare provider for AmeriGroup, and is a grantee of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. The State grants allow us to provide services to persons who otherwise could not afford treatment.
The Transitional Living and Moms with Kids program require a $100.00 Admission Fee and $135.00 per week.
The Independent Living program require a $100.00 Admission Fee and $140.00 per week fee.


How long does treatment last?
Residential treatment typically lasts from 14 to 45 days, depending on the individual. Intensive Outpatient groups meet for eight weeks. Morning and evening IOP groups are offered. Because we have a full continuum of care, a resident could stay at Mending Hearts a year or more.

What will the resident be doing during treatment?
The resident is in the process of receiving the basic tools necessary to begin living a chemically free lifestyle. The process includes education through lectures and films. Group therapy as well as community living is a beginning point for learning new ways to explore feelings buried by the use of alcohol and other drugs and relating to others in new ways. The resident will also attend self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Double Trouble in Recovery for co-occurring disorders. Throughout treatment, the emphasis will be on developing self-responsibility, owning and accepting the consequences of one’s behavior – in a supportive and caring environment. Each component of treatment is included for therapeutic reasons to help the resident begin recovery.

Can Residents receive mail and/or make telephone calls?
During Residential Treatment, residents are not allowed to keep their cell phones or make phone calls unless approved by their Counselor. After Residential Treatment, in all other programs, residents can have their cell phones and a house telephone is in every apartment.

All residents, no matter what program they are in can receive mail.
While it is not read by staff, we do require the mail to be opened in front of staff.
Packages may be searched.
Mail can be sent to 1003 43rd Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37209.
It will be handed out at certain times in each program.


What should I bring with me?

*Please note that any unallowed items may be returned to the family or friends who transported the client, or the client may rent a locker and store the items there. Locker rent is required to be paid up-front for 30 days.

In Residential Treatment:
● No more than 10 Outfits – casual clothes
● Sweater or jacket
● Sleepwear and slippers
● Personal toiletries – nothing with alcohol in it
● Approximately $10.00/wk. No more than $50.00 cash is allowed.
● Any prescription drugs you are taking

In All Other Programs:
The same but no more than 20 Outfits and some spending money.


What is not allowed?

In Residential Treatment:
● Cell phones
● Revealing clothing, tank tops, clothing with alcohol, drug or sexually suggestive images or words.
● TVs, radios, CD/DVD players, iPods, etc.
● Reading material (Bibles and other spiritual material are allowed)
● Musical instruments
● No personal hygiene products with ALCOHOL in the first three ingredients
● No tampons
● No outside food or drinks
● No aerosol cans or anything that has alcohol in it

In All Other Programs:
Revealing clothing, tank tops, clothing with alcohol, drug or sexually suggestive images or words.


Is smoking allowed?
Yes, in designated smoking areas.

Can my family bring me things I need?
In Residential Treatment, during the first 3 days the resident may receive things needed by having someone drop it off at the Administrative Office at 1002 44th Ave., N., Nashville, TN 37209. After that all items must be mailed to1003 43rd Ave N, Nashville, TN 37209 address.
Please note that during the Family Seminar, Residential Treatment residents are not allowed to accept things given to them at the Seminar.
In all other programs, residents who are not on furlough may go off campus and receive items. No one is to drop off items at individual apartments.


Does Mending Hearts have a Family Program?
Because we believe that chemical dependency is a disease that not only affects the person abusing chemicals but also anyone who cares about that person, Mending Hearts is dedicated to helping families and significant others understand addiction and begin healing within the family unit. For this reason Mending Hearts offers an Intensive Family Seminar one time per month for families of anyone in our programs. There is no out-of-pocket expense for the Seminar.


What happens and what will I learn during the Family Seminar?
The Family Seminar gives family members a place to explore the above topics in a more structured, intensive manner and to meet and share with others who have had similar experiences. Through lectures, discussions and exercises, it also is a time for growth, reflection and healing within the family unit especially as the resident participates with the family.
